Lava Caves or Ice Caves

Iceland is a very volcanic island, and we also have truly impressive glaciers and ice caps. Some of the most unusual things you can do here is visiting s lava tube cave. They were formed during volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.

During high winter, you can also take a tour to the natural ice caves that are found under the ice cap of Vatnajökull, at the National Park there. But for this you will need a multiday tour with overnight in the region.

Ice Cave and Ice Tunnel – not the same thing
You can also visit the man-made ice tunnel in Glacier Langjökull during one of our super jeep tours, but note that this is not the same as the natural ice caves mentioned above these lines. Iceland is certainly the land of Fire and Ice.

We have at least two different day tours where you can see fjords near the capital of Iceland. The nearest fjord is Hvalfjörður. And then there’re some in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula as well. But the most impressive fjords are the West Fjords, and the East Fjords. That’s not a day tour, of course…

The Golden Circle – Iceland’s Most Popular Tour

The “Golden Circle” is Iceland’s best known one-day tour. It’s a traditional itinerary which often takes a full-day tour.
It always includes 3 main stops: the National Park of Thingvellir, the geysers (of which Strokkur Geyser erupts every 5-8 minutes), and the impressive Gullfoss Falls.

Budget Tours with Small Groups

Iceland is rather expensive, or so they say. If the super jeep tours are too pricey for your budget, but you still don’t want to compromise on getting a personal tour, then tours on minivans may be your happy medium. Suitable for solo travelers, or families. If you have children, we can lend you a booster seat or child seat for free. Check our reviews online on TripAdvisor – Discover Iceland – discover.is

Day Tours by Minibus
We have a number of excellent day tours departing from Reykjavík, and in some of them, with possible pick up at Selfoss or Hella. If you have 4 or 5 days, then it’s very easy to simply base yourself in the capital and do day trips from there. Also, if you buy all our minibus tours, we will give you a discount. Just email us at info@discover.is for a price offer.

For a longer stay

If you stay for 6-12 days in Iceland, or more, and want like to see the whole of Iceland, then it’s best to move around. Get a multiday tour, and stay overnight in different locations. You can cover the Ring Road in 7 days, though 10 would be optimal. In winter, watching the northern lights from a hotel located in the countryside is equivalent to a free northern light tour. You would not need to book it nor pay – just enjoy from outside the hotel.

Activities
Several activities are possible too, such as horse riding, glacier hiking, snowmobiling and lava tube caving. We at discover.is can customize a group tour for you and your family, or a corporate trip, or simply if you’re traveling with friends. Best would be to contact us via email: info@discover.is and get a price quote. We have super jeeps (that’s modified 4×4 offroad vehicles), and minibuses.

Packages or Day Tours
You can choose between tour packages, or guided day tours using Reykjavík as a base, if your stay is of about 5 days of less.

Finding the Northern Lights in Iceland

Would you like some help? We operate northern lights minibus and super jeep tours, departing from Reykjavík. We can pick you up anywhere in the capital area, including the suburbs. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a hotel, or if you wish for us to pick you up at an AirBnB apartment, for example.

Combo Deals
We offer combo deals of the northern lights tour, and Golden Circle tour. Although it’s bought as one, we can manually change the date of each tour, so you don’t need to do them on the same date. You then receive a confirmation or cancellation for the northern light tour on the same day of the tour.

If we cannot go, we offer you to reschedule. And if you never go on the tour, we give you 100% refund for it. Furthermore, on the footer of this site you can find links to the websites that we use to monitor the cloud cover and aurora forecasts.

Hire a Tour Guide and Vehicle

You can buy most of our tours as a private tour with an Icelandic professional tour guide. Just select the corresponding “private tour” marking in the booking system. In case of any doubt, please contact us on info@discover.is and we’ll help you out with your request.

We have super jeep tours, and minibus tours, bus tours as well, that can be operated on a private basis, and even customized to your wishes. For example, you may need a different pick up time, or location. You may land in KEF very early and wish to start the tour as soon as possible. This calls for a customized pick up and a fully private tour.

Day Tours and Multiday Tours
If you want to base yourself in Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, and your stay is of 4 or 5 days, then taking day tours is what makes sense. If you stay for 7 days or more, a multiday tour can be a good option.

We can also do 2-day or 3-day tours, which are suitable if you want to reach locations such as the iceberg lagoon of Jökulsárlón, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in winter.

Watching Puffins and Other Birds in Iceland

As you know, nature in Iceland is simply mesmerizing. Come and see it with your own eyes! Among the wildlife, we have puffins, Arctic Terns, Ravens, Eiders, Cormorants, Gannets, Kittiwakes, Black-headed Gulls, and many other seagulls, as well as owls, eagles, hawks, etc. Puffins are in Iceland during their breeding season, which is from late April until mid August, though timing may vary depending on how extended the warmer season may be each year.

Wildlife in Iceland
But it’s not all about birds. In Iceland you can go whale watching, being summer the best season. We also have the small and very mild Icelandic Horse (don’t call them ponies, since it’s a race of its own) and many horse riding tours along the island. In East Iceland you may be lucky to see reindeer.

Foxes are often seen in the Westfjords, and other places. Minks are harder to find, though. And then there’re of course seals, such as in the iceberg lagoon of Jökulsárlón, or in the southern part of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. And if you have children, you may want to check on the animal farms and petting zoos.

Super Jeep Tours – The Real Iceland

What is a super jeep? Why are the tours so pricey? Super jeeps are Iceland’s best monsters. We modify the vehicles quite heavily so that we can drive them on our glaciers, and into the highlands. This is off-road on steroids!

Asides getting humongous tires of 38” – 46” (because by definition it’s not a super jeep if the tires are smaller than 38”), these vehicles are modified for a much higher clearance, an extra step is added to be able to get into such a car, they get very strong extra front lights, the gear ratio is adjusted to the tire size, they will have 100% 4×4 drive lockers, the body is reshaped to house the large wheels with wide fender flares, the suspension is modified, and an air compressor is added to both deflate and inflate the tires. Finally, there will also be a fire extinguisher, a shovel and ropes, as indispensable part of the equipment. So that was the info on super jeeps for car nerds 🙂 And here’s a little presentation on YouTube – What is a Super Jeep?

Comfortable and Ample Leg Space
We use Nissan Patrol and Ford vehicles for our tours, the reason being because they’re very comfortable for the passenger, with good leg space. And they have proven to be the best vehicles in very challenging conditions. But note that during tours most of the attractions are reached on tarmac roads, naturally.
