Mývatn Nature Must-Sees | Private Day Tour

The Mývatn Region is beyond question the gem of North Iceland. There you can see an almost chimerical realm of spluttering blue mud pots, hot springs, stinking fumaroles, majestic waterfalls, weird lava formations, and volcanic craters – for starters!

This is a private tour that starts from Akureyri.

The Mývatn Region is beyond question the gem of North Iceland. There you can see an almost chimerical realm of spluttering blue mud pots, hot springs, stinking fumaroles, majestic waterfalls, weird lava formations, and volcanic craters – for starters!

Due to its geological outset, the region offers the visitor multiple natural features at short distances, so you can experience the best that North Iceland has to offer, in one day. This is the Iceland you’ve always imagined

We travel on a 4×4 comfortable SUV (not a super jeep) with a maximum of 6 people. This is a full-day tour where we will explore all the basic attractions of the Mývatn area and some extra ones. And you will of course delight in the views of the magnificent Fjord Eyjafjörður in the Arctic Ocean.

You’ll be visiting attractions such as Goðafoss Falls, which have a very interesting history of the time when Iceland abandoned paganism. You’ll hear how the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir were formed just 2300 years ago. There’s also the small lava Cave Grjótagjá, which contains a pool of warm spring water. We then visit the largest hot spring area in Iceland, the Námafjall Hverir mud pots and fumaroles. And among the many highlights there’s the huge volcano Crater Víti, which means “hell” and is located by the Krafla Power Station. There are other stops as well (see the google map below).

It’s possible to do this day tour from the AEY Airport in Akureyri. Also, we have available pick up locations between Siglufjörður, to anywhere in Akureyri. Pick-up & drop-off locations may be different, and there’s no extra cost for this. This is very practical for visitors who won’t be having a car.

Have fun in North Iceland !!

REVIEW: “Creative and Fun Tour Guides”

We went for a 7 day private tour of Iceland in late December thinking that time of year would give us the best chance to see the Northern Lights and the incredible Ice Caves we’d seen in various photos. We scoured Trip Advisor for the best tour guides and landed on Discover Iceland. Obviously, you’re always at the mercy of the weather that time of year, particularly in Iceland.

Northern Lights 4×4 | Private Super Jeep Tour

What are the advantages of going a private tour by modified 4×4 truck on a northern lights hunting adventure?

Well, there’s the travel comfort and sitting space available in the vehicle. The tour is personalised since we only tour out in a private group. It’s a very flexible travel experience that one can say that we “play by the ear”. We can lend you a tripod at no extra cost. And there’s of course the 4×4 thrill!

We may go on mountain tracks in the vicinity of Reykjavik, or lava fields. Weather conditions and visibility play an important role in deciding which route we take. While hunting for the lights we show you the nature of Iceland in the dark, and we enjoy watching starry skies with no light pollution nearby – that’s an experience in itself!

This private tour is for a 4×4 that can take up to 4 persons if your group is bigger we do have bigger 4×4 trucks for group sizes ranging from 5 to 16 passengers, just email us on info@discover.is for upgrade.

Reykjanes South Peninsula Private Tour

Ideal if you want to see as much as possible, with little driving. Blue Lagoon as an option.

REYKJANES – PRIVATE TOUR

Ideal for those who want to see as much as possible, with little driving

The fact is that the Reykjanes Peninsula is a treasure chest of attractions, both natural and cultural. We can include the Blue Lagoon as a part the tour.

Now… the program! :) Where do we go? We begin with Lake Kleifarvatn and the hot springs of Krýsuvík, named Seltún. These locations are part of the Reykjanes Unesco Geopark. We’ll see a Ship Wreck from 1988 and then pay a visit to the fishing village of Grindavík and look at its harbour.

Then we head to the ever changing hot springs of Gunnuhver, the Reykjanes Lighthouse, and the Valahnúkar Cliffs, where the Atlantic Ridge comes ashore. The next stop will help you understand more about the geology of Iceland, as we stand on the Bridge Between Continents. But first we enjoy the black-sand beach of Sandvík, which was one of the shooting locations of the movie ‘Flags of Our Fathers’. Then driving along the rugged coastline we find Garður and its two very photogenic lighthouses. During the summer time it should be possible to see quite a lot of bird life in some of these areas.

At the end of the tour we have a cultural visit to the Viking World, which is optional to go in. You’ll learn about how the vikings sailed to America a thousand years ago! Then we come by the Blue Lagoon to see the beautiful blue silica water and the lava, and then return to Reykjavík.

* If your desired date in not available on the calendar, send us an email to info@discover.is – we may be able to arrange for an extra departure if the minimum is met. Also, see our half-day tour.

REVIEW: “Best way to discover Iceland!”

[…] The best thing is that you don’t go with a crowded bus, but you enjoy a trip which is nearly private. Both guides were knowledgeable and nice and you really see lots of landscapes and places that you wouldn’t be able to see if you go with a bus or by yourself, especially in winter!

REVIEW: “Adventure with our very own Viking!”

a fantastic guide, full of information about Iceland and it’s history keeping us entertained on a journey along the south coast which we will never forget. Thank you for probably the best trip of my life!

Landmannalaugar in summer offers you the option to hike and bathe in the geothermal pool. We’ll have a 2-hour stop in Landmannalaugar, and this should give you enough time to really enjoy this location. We also enjoy having a small group and therefore be able tend to your wishes more personally!

It’s great if you have brought your own lunch pack. But if not, we will make a stop along the way where you can buy it, since there’s no real shopping to be done once we’ve arrived to our destination. Our route on the 4×4 minibus takes us to Waterfall Hjálparfoss, where once upon a time horses and men were able to rest after a long journey. We’ll take you to the paradisaical valley of Gjáin. Water cascades in all directions. Then we have an impressive waterfall called Sigöldufoss. We’ll then visit the Crater Lake Bláhylur, which has been nick-named “Blue Pool” Crater. It’s also known as Hnausapollur, but that’s certainly more difficult to pronounce in Icelandic.

Once in Landmannalaugar we start to see the famous rhyolite mountains and their strong colors, reminding us of a painter’s palette. Since this tour is in summer, we recommend you to do the easy hike (see the pictures), which should take about 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on how many photos you take. And if you have time and you want, there’s the geothermal pool too. Don’t forget your towel and swim suit!

This is a long day tour, and we hope you will enjoy it just like a kid! :)

Contact us at info@discover.is if you can’t find tour availability for your selected date. We may be able to arrange for an extra departure, if the minimum is met (4 adults). We also have our super jeep tour – book here if you want to upgrade.

Note: pick up from Selfoss is possible.

There will be a number of secret stops as well, but we can’t tell you about it. “Only Guide knows” …

REVIEW: “Landmannalaugar”

“Although relatively expensive this trip proved to be the highlight of a fantastic holiday. Travelling in March, the F208 road was completely hidden by snow, but with an incredible 4 by 4 and driver we navigated some of the most awesome scenery of mountains, lava fields, rivers and volcanoes…

REVIEW: “Worth travelling to Iceland just to tour with this company”

“[…] I don’t want to risk any plot spoilers for future passengers so I won’t say what he drove us over or through but it was immense fun, utterly exhilarating… we’re both still excited by the experience. Our thanks to Discover Iceland, to Reynir and to Stefan for helping us to make life-long memories. This all meant a great deal to the two of us. Truly, it would have been worth flying to Iceland just to go on tour with them.
